A female house sparrow
Did you know that there are more sparrows in the world than any other bird? This is a house sparrow but sparrows will build their nests in trees or houses. A sparrow knows how to protect itself and perhaps that is why there are so many sparrow.
I learned something else about sparrows from Jesus. He said, 'Not even one sparrow falls without your Father in heaven knowing about it. Do you know what that means? It means that God watches over and cares for all his creatures.
Now, if God knows about a sparrow how much more does he know about you? Jesus said, 'You are much more precious to God than a sparrow. God even knows how many hairs you have on your head!' There is a good reason why Jesus spoke about a sparrow. Can you guess what that reason is? See if you can pick the right answer from these three:
1. He wanted children to watch out for sparrows
2. He wants us to love all God's creatures
3. He wants us never to be afraid because if God knows and loves a sparrow how much more does he love you?
Do you ever worry? Do you ever get afraid. I was terribly afraid once. I was four years old. It was dark, very dark. There were no lights inside or outside my bedroom window. Suddenly, I heard the sirens warning us of an air raid attack. The Germans were bombing our town. Oh! I was so frightened. My mum and dad called me and we rushed downstairs and out into the cold night and into the air raid shelter in our backyard. It was crowded with people all waiting anxiously to hear what would happen. Suddenly loud screams rent the sky and then awful explosions as bombs hit our town. Then, everything went quiet. It was dreadfully quiet like a graveyard. We kept waiting for the next bomb to explode but after a while the sirens sounded again the all clear. We gladly went back to our homes and to bed. In those dreadful days we even had air raid drills at school. At such time we prayed to the Lord that he would keep us safe and he did. Not one hair of our heads was lost. Jesus knew about all these awful things that happen but he said to his disciples, those who loved him, 'Don't worry about anything, about clothes, about food or about money for God know you need all these things and he watches over you.' (Matthew 10:29-31) Here is a song for you to sing:

- Now don't you let the troubles of tomorrow
Bring sorrow to your heart and burdens too,
For if the Father's eye is on the sparrow,
Then surely he will care for you.
He knoweth, he careth, each burden he beareth,
For if the Father's eye is on the sparrow,
Then surely he will care for you.
His Eye on the Sparrow Lyrics
Why should I feel discouraged,
why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart feel lonely,
and long for heaven and home,
when Jesus is my portion,
a constant friend is he,
His eye is on the sparrow,
and I know he watches over me.
His eye is on the sparrow
and I know he watches over me.
I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
His eye is on the sparrow,
and I know he watches me.
His eye is on the sparrow
and I know he watches
I know he watches,
I know he watches me.
I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
His eye is on the sparrow
and I know he watches me...I know he watches me.
Why should I feel discouraged,
why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart feel lonely,
and long for heaven and home,
when Jesus is my portion,
a constant friend is he,
His eye is on the sparrow,
and I know he watches over me.
His eye is on the sparrow
and I know he watches over me.
I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
His eye is on the sparrow,
and I know he watches me.
His eye is on the sparrow
and I know he watches
I know he watches,
I know he watches me.
I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
His eye is on the sparrow
and I know he watches me...I know he watches me.
