Weasel and Stoat 3 (continued)
How excited they were! But where was Fox?
‘Well, we can’t just stand here on deck, Stoaty, we must go below deck and find our cabin.’
‘Yes, let’s do that.’
‘Our cabin is number 101, Stoaty. I wonder how far down 101 is?’
‘Here is a lift. Let’s take the lift and ask the operator.’
‘Good idea, Stoaty.’
‘Our cabin number is 101. Can you take us down to the floor where we can find it?’
‘We don’t have floors, Sir. Floors are in buildings. A ship has decks, upper and lower decks. Let me see 101 is on the lowest deck. Get in the lift then and I will take you down to deck twenty five.’
‘We have never travelled by ship before,’ Stoat said.
‘No! It is the only way to travel to see the world. I was born on a ship.’
‘You were born on one?’
‘Yes.’
Weasel and Stoat looked at each other.
‘Do you mean that a ship was your home?’ Weasel asked.
‘Yes, I never lived on land until I was fourteen. I was a sailor mole born and bred. I’ve mixed with the aristocracy, I have. You can’t mix with them on land but on a ship they have to mix with us because they need us.’
‘Is that so? Did you hear that Stoaty, we are going to mix with the aristocracy.’
The lift came to a halt and Weasel and Stoat got out.’
‘Just press the bell if you want to go up on deck. The restaurant is on deck 16.’
‘Thank you mole. First we must find our cabin.’
Mole left them standing in a long corridor with many doors facing each other.
‘The odd numbers are on the left and the even numbers on the right. We must look on the left Stoaty.’
‘The number of the cabin facing us is seventy five, Weasel.’
‘Seventy five! This is a very big ship! Let’s look for 101.’
‘It’s this way, Weasel.’
They walked and walked until they found number 101 cabin.
‘Here at last. Why we must have walked a mile, Stoaty.’
‘That’s strange, Weasel. The door is open.’
